I am in the camp of the former. I think the ocassional marketing plug in your facebook status or notes is a great idea as long as long as it's just that - ocassional. I agree with Taylor - I prefer Twitter for this. I think we'll have to get someone to enhance the Twitter app so it automatically updates your facebook status too. Any takers? You can also (as you probably know) post links that will show in everyone's news feed. Another good idea (if you like spamming your friends) is to write a note about it and say they were all mentioned in it.
